Describe your workshop/presentation (300-500 words):
This workshop examines an emerging issue in shelters today around burnout, vicarious trauma and the lack of radical self-care – all of which can lead to oppression and institutional abuse. We’ll talk about the challenges of setting boundaries in a shelter setting and how staff who are survivors are directly affected by this. Additionally, we’ll look at how power and oppression affect us both personally and professionally. We’ll learn to recognize our own triggers, develop a deeper understanding of how past traumas show up, and begin looking at self-care holistically so we can sustain our work in the movement to end violence against women.

In order to reduce institutional abuse, we need to create healthy work environments and healthy work cultures. By the end of this workshop, participants will have an understanding of what a healthy work culture looks like at their own shelters and what it takes to create and sustain a culture of radical self-care.

This is an interactive workshop that provides opportunities for participants to share their own experiences, interact with, and learn from one another.
