Organization Introduction:
Since its inception in 1994, ECPAT Taiwan has worked relentlessly in preventing child sexual exploitation and trafficking, as well as championing child rights and online safety. Our founder, Mrs. Ruth Kao, who since 1985 has devoted herself to saving sexually exploited children, set up a committee to address child sexual exploitation in 1991, and formally established ECPAT Taiwan in 1994 to push for preemptive action against child sexual exploitation and to promote the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, in the hope of garnering public support to provide the traumatized child the ability and opportunity to “soar high on the wings of an eagle”.
Describe your workshop/presentation (300-500 words):
As technology becomes an essential tool in our society, it can also be abused by perpetrators to harm children through sex trafficking and online child sexual exploitation. In many places in the world, the mobile phone is technology that most people – no matter their economic status – have access to. Mobile phones and the Internet provide people with new information, opportunities and connection to others; but perpetrators can also use these technologies to sexually exploit the vulnerable. The link between technology and sexual exploitation is undeniable and important to understand. This presentation will explore the negative and protective roles that technology plays in youth sexual exploitation. NGOs from the United States and Taiwan will talk about what they see and the work they do around the role of technology and how it is misused to facilitate sex trafficking and online child sexual exploitation. Facebook will discuss their broader efforts to combat child sexual exploitation on their platform, including their policies, technology tools, and collaborative work with NGO’s and law enforcement. The session will also discuss the various barriers that survivors seeking help face and offer safety planning tips.

Audace Garnett
Biography:
Audace has over a decade of experience working with victims of crime. She began her career in 2004 as a disability advocate at Barrier Free Living, a non-profit organization providing support for domestic violence victims with disabilities. Audace then worked at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s (DA’s) Office within the Victim Services Unit, where she worked with survivors impacted by sexual assault, domestic violence and sex trafficking. She later served as the Teen Services Coordinator advocating for survivors 24 and under within the Youthful Offender Domestic Violence Court(YODVC). After six years at the DA’s Office, she moved on to Day One, an intervention program where she trained adult professionals throughout New York City on the intersection of teen dating violence and domestic minor sex trafficking. She is currently a Technology Safety Specialist with Safety Net at the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) where she focuses specifically on the intersection between domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and technology. Audace was born in Guyana, South America and raised in New York City.
