Organization Introduction:
Star Shelter provides safe housing for women and children who are survivors of family violence. The shelter takes a holistic approach in helping its residents by providing them with basic needs such as safe accommodation, clothing and food and meeting their practical needs through case management. There are many programmes to help them develop self-reliance and resiliency which aim to improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Describe your workshop/presentation (300-500 words):
What is it like to walk in the shoes of a survivor? How does it feel to experience violence? Why is it difficult to leave an abusive relationship? What is it like living in a shelter? These questions and more can be answered through an experiential audience engagement, where the audience will walk in the shoes of a survivor for 20 mins. Through a visualisation exercise and watching a video, the audience will be enabled to see what the survivor sees, feel what she feels and walk in her stride.

We find that advocacy is more effective when we use this technique to engage the audience. As they participate and try to walk in the shoes of a survivor it enables them to gain more empathy. Through this technique they are able to dispel some biases and assumptions about violence against women. In Singapore, some myths about intimate partner violence include the belief that if the victim does not leave the abuser, it means that the violence is not that serious, because if it were serious she would leave.
