Background : Access to affordable shelter remains a great problem in Nanyuki , Laikipia county affecting the low earning population ( less than 1$ a day )in slums and informal settlements . These has led to increased violence meted against women and girls in forms of rape , defilement ( sexual assaults ) , child trafficking for sex while compromising health and increase of street families . There is acute demand for housing.
Methods :
Study carried out May- October 2018 to establish key factors that contribute to housing poverty , policies in place to remedy the situation by governments and communities and provide evidence -based information to guide policies and support advocacy. Structured open-ended discussions ,interviews and questionnaires were undertaken engaging Kenya Lands Alliance , activists , civil society organizations , policy makers , slum dwellers and health providers purposely selected so that findings could be applicable elsewhere.
Literature review .
Findings . Materials for constructing house are not affordable by majority of slum dwellers . Land policies favor the rich at the expense of the poor. Investors target the middle and high income earners. Insecurity is rife in slums .High mortality and morbidity rates was noted in slums and informal settlements . Women and girls of reproductive ages ( 18-49 yrs ) lack access to family planning methods and optional contraceptives .
Conclusion:
Ensure prices of building materials are affordable Reform land laws and policies . Ensure contraceptive coverage for all in need . Need exists for co-financing . Reduce poverty , violence against women , Ensure inclusiveness .Reduce barriers to access housing .Put in place measures to reduce infant and under-five mortality and morbidity rates in slums . Enhance peace and security to protect women and girls from sexual and physical violence .
